Recap: "The State of the Music Scene" Discussion... →
In short: there’s some pretty amazing music being made in town right now, but it’s the bands’ own damn fault there aren’t more people aware of/participating in what’s going on.

A reaction to the reactions of the 2010 RFT Music...
People sure got their knickers in a kerfuffle over the announcement of the nominees for the 2010 RFT Music Awards. I mean, just look at those comments! You’ve got your folks who are hyperbolically outraged that [band you’ve never heard of] wasn’t nominated for [whatever inconsequential category], as well as your folks who were actually nominated for something but still feel the...

Legitimate question about LouFest
I’m as excited as the next guy about the LouFest announcement, but something about the line-up seems a little strange: there’s only one stage. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a music festival with only one stage - festival organizing 101 seems to dictate having one main tent with at least one or two smaller sideshows running to attract curiosos and more eclectic artists.

Prop A Passes →
St. Louis County voters voiced their strong support for mass transit in the St. Louis region, approving a 0.5% sales tax increase to support Metro operations and possible future expansion. The approval of Prop A means that a like sales tax of 0.25% approved by St. Louis City voters will go into effect. The approval of Prop A means that for the first time in Metro history, the transit agency has a...

Quoth Tiny Mix Tapes: “Most of Pocahaunted’s music has been in the murkier, ambient sort of school of primitive experimentalism, but Island Diamonds is all druggy tribal rhythms and hypnotic dub jams, drenched in a grimey sort of reverb that smacks of the...

Art & Commerce & Cherokee
Sharon Zukin, a sociologist and author of Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places, is quoted in last week’s New Yorker as saying:
Everyone says it was the art galleries and edgy performance places that were drawing in the public. But I think it was the consumption spaces — the stores, bars, and cafes where you could look through plate-glass windows and see people...

LouFest Rumors
It seems everyone in St. Louis has been getting their fleur de lis panties in a bunch over the announcement of LouFest. It’s got an inane name, it’s going to be the hottest weekend of the year, there’s never adequate parking in Forest Park, yadda, yadda, yadda. You know what? Let’s just let this positive be a positive for once. It’s a huge wide open space, ideal for...

Why Schtumblr?
You may be asking yourself, “Why, out of the literally thousands of possible names you could have given your tumble log, did you settle on ‘Schtumblr’? Besides, isn’t there a law on the books requiring every single Saint Louis-centric website to include ‘stl’ somewhere in the URL? People are going to get confused, hon.”
Well, hypothetical reader,...
